Sri Lanka is small enough that almost anywhere is a day trip from anywhere else, but a handful of routes account for most of the trips travellers actually book — the airport run, the hill-country classic, the coastal dash to Galle, and a few connectors between them. Here’s what to expect from each before you book.

Colombo to Kandy: the hill-country classic

At around 125 km and 3.5 hours, this is the route most first-time visitors take once they leave Colombo — a scenic climb into the hills that ends at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Traffic through Kadawatha and Kegalle can add time, so an early start pays off.

Colombo to Galle: the southern coast run

The Southern Expressway makes this a straightforward 130 km, roughly 2-hour transfer down to Galle Fort’s cobbled streets and ramparts — one of the fastest ways to trade the city for the coast.

Negombo to Sigiriya: straight into the Cultural Triangle

A popular pairing for travellers who land at the airport and head inland first — about 150 km and 3.5 hours to the base of Sigiriya Rock, right in the heart of the Cultural Triangle.

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya: through tea country

A shorter but slower 75 km, around 2.5 hours, climbing through terraced tea estates into “Little England.” This is the drive most travellers photograph the most — worth timing for daylight.

Colombo to Ella: the long way, with stops worth making

At roughly 220 km and 6 hours by road, this is the longest common route on the island — but it passes waterfalls and ends at the Nine Arch Bridge, so most travellers treat it as a scenic day rather than a straight transfer.
